Meaning:- Stachys (Gr) Spike-like.
Tournefortii (L) For Joseph de Tournefort (1656-1708), renaissance
plant systematist.
General description:- Short to tall, densely white-felted perennial.
Stems:-
1) 30-100 cm, very densely white-lanate-tomentose, eglandular.
Leaves:-
1) 50-75 x 30-50 mm, ovate or ovate-oblong, cordate, densely white-tomentose.
Flowers:-
1) Upper bracts, shorter than the flowers.
2) Bracteoles, lanceolate.
3) Calyx 6-12 mm, eglandular;
a) teeth equal, c. 1/3 as long as the tube.
4) Corolla 15-20 mm.
Fruit:-
1) Nutlets, 4, 1-seeded.
Key features:-
1) Leaves, grey-green to white beneath.
2) Whole plant very densely white-tomentose or lanate-tomentose.
3) Calyx-teeth, all equal.
4) Stem, usually more than 30 cm.
5) Upper bracts, shorter than the flowers.
6) Bracteoles, lanceolate.
7) Leaf, bases cordate.
Habitat:- Dry, rocky slopes and flats in coastal areas with dry open shrubby
vegetation over limestone, (0 - 200 m.).
Distribution:- Endemic to Crete and Libya. On Crete known only from a few places
in the lowlands of the north-west. Rare.
